HOME TO THE "SMOKE THAT THUNDERS"
Lying between two great African rivers, the Zambezi to the north and
the Limpopo to the south, Zimbambwe offers one of the worlds greatest
spectacles- the Victoria Falls or "mosi otunya" meaning the "Smoke that
thunders". This was the name given by the locals for the largest waterfall
in the world. The 1688 metre wide river plunges across it's entire width
with heights varying from 61 to 108 meters. The best view of the
falls is seen on the "Flight of Angels" which circles the Falls for
a 15 minute aerial view of the Falls. Zimbambwe's largest national
park and elephant sanctuary is Hwangwe National Park which is ideal for
game viewing and bird watching. Other places of interest are the Kariba
Dam, the Chinhoyi caves with it's "Sleeping Pool" the Botanical Gardens
in Vumba, Bulawayo and the Khami, Dhio Dhlo and Naletale Ruins and last
but not least the Geat Zimbambwe Ruins Monument "Zimbambwe" means "House
of Stone" and the country's rich history can be traced to the Great Zimbamwe
ruins, a stone structure settlement, once the capital of the great Munhumatapa
kingdom in southern Africa. The largest single ancient structure in Sub
Saharan Africa and dates between the 13th and 15th centuries A.D.
